John 17: The Intereessory Prayer of Jesus
Since we are
some 2,000 years beyond any first person witnesses of the intimate personality
of Christ it is often difficult for us to get a clear view of just how sincere
and deliberate our Lord’s life was on our behalf. He lived
for our benefit in the body of flesh; that He may die on In chapter 17, we have a very direct prayer on behalf of the followers of Christ. Verse nine states: “I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.” And not only for the followers in that day of His ministry, but for today as well; spanning the ages. Verse 20 “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word” There are 7 direct requests Jesus makes in this prayer that forever impact every believer. Seven petitions: (1) That Jesus may be glorified as the Son who has glorified the Father ( John 17:1). (2) for restoration to the eternal glory ( John 17:5); (3) for the safety of believers from (a) the world ( John 17:11) (b) the evil one ( John 17:15); (4) for the sanctification of believers ( John 17:17); (5) for the spiritual unity of believers ( John 17:21); (6) that the world may believe ( John 17:21); (7) that believers may be with Him in heaven to behold and share His glory ( John 17:24).
